INNOVATION ENTREPRENEURSHIP UNIVERSITY INDUSTRY ROLE

Wednesday, April 27 › 09h30

José Salcedo has M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, California, under NATO and Fulbright fellowships, and he also served as IBM Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford. After about 10 years of graduate studies and professional activity in the US, Jose returned to native Portugal to join the faculty of the Physics Dept. at U. Porto, as well as co-found and lead INESC Porto, a private non-profit R&D institute focusing on IT, optical telecommunications and optoelectronics. Between 1995 and 2000 he co-founded and co-led ENT, a successful optical networking company within the EFACEC industrial group, and in 2002 he quit from his tenured full professor position in the EE Dept. at U. Porto to found Multiwave Photonics in late 2003. Multiwave is a high tech industrial company that develops, manufactures and commercializes in international markets lasers based on fiber-optic technologies, for industrial and environmental monitoring applications. With headquarters in Porto and an office in San Jose, California, Multiwave operates globally within its limited size (30 people, including 10 Ph.D.´s).
José is a member of Academia Europaea, SPIE, OSA and IEEE, having been awarded the "2009 Engineering Achievement Award" by the IEEE Photonics Society “in recognition of outstanding technical and leadership contributions to pulsed fiber lasers, in particular all-fiber ring laser architectures, and of his pioneering efforts aimed at developing, promoting and commercializing this technology in Portugal – and later in international markets.” In February 2011, Jose served as General Chair of FILAS 2011, the first international fiber laser applications conference within the OSA framework, and will again serve as General Chair for FILAS 2012 to be held in San Diego. José´s main interests now reside in entrepreneurship and innovation, leading teams of bright people in ambitious international projects while also contributing to improve the venture capital situation in Portugal.
